About the Author

Laurie Winslow Sargent has been an author since 1988, writing articles for national and regional magazines. She has written two books on parenting, and has contributed chapters to seventeen other books on various topics including writing and Christian faith. Sargent also recently compiled the vintage science fiction anthologies, compiling the works of John Hayden Howard for the Reawakened Worlds series.

Sargent has also been a speaker at various conferences and workshops, on topics including freelance writing and parenting, and enjoyed being interviewed on the radio on shows airing in nearly every US state. Her most fun article was written about a Norwegian Olympic athlete who she interviewed in the mountains of Norway.

Sargent has been married for 45 years, has three grown children and six grandchildren as of 2024.

Podcast Interview: Parenting Personalities and History

This blog post links to the Heart of the Matter Radio podcast (Cynthia L. Simmons), episode Oct 2, 2020: How to Delight in Your Child as You Homeschool. Cynthia interviewed me about parent-child personality differences as written about in the book Delight in Your Child's Design (Second Edition). We also looked back through history at one 1930s mom's parenting style, revealed in near-100-year-old letters.

1848: An Abolitionist Bill for Secession

Little-known History ~ Abolitionist voters in Massachusetts, 17 years before the 13th amendment, proposed a bill: denounce slavery or secede from the Union. I’d never heard before of any bills proposing a state secede unless slavery was abolished, have you? When I found this document with 7 signers connected to my family tree, I felt heartened. In these days of racial discord, it’s nice to see evidence of people who always thought slavery a horror and fought hard to destroy it. Here's that interesting document:
